Overseas Students Prospectus

I. Applicants

Foreigners, Chinese of foreign citizenship and overseas Chinese who are interested in Chinese language and culture and aged above 16 are all qualified applicants. All applicants must observe Chinese laws and decrees, abide by the rules and regulations of the university and respect Chinese customs.

II. Application and Entry Visas

1. Representatives of foreign universities, high schools and social organizations, as well as individuals, are requested to contact the university’s Foreign Affairs Office for application forms two months before their departure to China.
2. Applicants should mail the completed application forms back to this office. A US$ 60 money order should be included to cover the registration fee.
3. Accepted applicants can apply to their nearest Chinese embassy or consulate for entry visas with the Admission Notice and the JW202 Form issued by this office.

III. Forms and Length of Programmes

1. Degree courses include Chinese language and culture, fine arts and music. They are all four-year courses. The spring semester starts in February or March, and the autumn semester in September. Each semester spans about 19 weeks and there are two semesters in one academic year.
2. Short-term classes include spoken Chinese, Cantonese, teacher-training, summer or winter camps, and Chinese culture. A short-term class may last from four to nine weeks, the exact length to be agreed upon by the university and the applicants.
3. The university also offers tour-and-learn classes which educate students through travel and direct contact with Chinese people. This kind of class may last from two to four weeks, the exact length to be agreed upon by the university and the applicants.

IV. Teaching and Study Arrangements

1 Chinese language and culture - Courses of this programme include modern Chinese language, ancient Chinese language, writing, basic literary theory, modern Chinese literature, ancient Chinese literature, contemporary Chinese literature and comparative literature.
2 Fine arts - Courses include drawing, water and colour drawing, calligraphy, Chinese painting, oil painting, engraved picture, photography, earthwork crafts, designs and Chinese fine arts.
3.Music - Courses include singing practice, song appreciation and lyric writing, piano, vocal, choir and conduct, history of music, dance, accordion, electric piano, Cantonese music and basic arts theory.
4. Teaching-training - The length of this class may vary from three months to one year and courses include teaching of Chinese language for foreign students, teaching practice, Chinese language testing method and modern Chinese.
5. Short-term Chinese language and culture - This class emphasises listening and speaking skills. The courses include basic Chinese, listening comprehension, conversation, reading and traditional Chinese culture.
6. Summer/Winter camp - Lectures are offered on spoken Chinese (Putonghua), calligraphy and Chinese Kongfu. Sightseeing is arranged for students to learn about China through direct contact.
7. Students are streamed into different classes according to their scores on the test for proficiency in Chinese. They will have experienced teachers.
8. Lessons are given from Monday to Friday, with a total of 16 to 18 class hours each week.
9. There will be numerous lectures especially for foreign students on Chinese calligraphy, tourism, martial arts, Cantonese cuisine and Chinese education. Extracurricular activities (generally once a month) include sightseeing in the city, field study in the countryside, attending folk dances and singing Chinese songs. They support class work and are provided free of charge.

V. Costs

1. The tuition fee is 3,280 RMB (app 400 USD) for one month, 7,380 RMB (app 900 USD) for one semester or 14,760 RMB (app 1800 USD) for one academic year. Costs for textbooks and other teaching materials are not included. The tuition fee must be paid in one lump sum when class begins, otherwise an extra 5% of the unpaid fee will be charged per month.

2. Board costs approximately US$ 3 a day per person. Meals are served at the school canteen.

3. Lodging costs:

Foreign teachers’ Accommodation (Accommodation for internationals): 1,500RMB/month, with furniture, beds, cooking equipment, bedding, air conditioning / heating, fridge, TV, washing machine, microwave, phone etc.

Guest House: US$ 10 a day for a category A room which includes one or two beds, a water heater, TV, telephone, refrigerator, air conditioner, bath and toilet. A category B room costs US$ 8 a day and includes one or two beds, TV, refrigerator and air conditioner with a common telephone, bath and toilet on each floor.

Or for the adventurous ones you could choose to share one room with 3 other Chinese undergraduate students at 1,500RMB/year in the students dormitories. Some oriental students did this and their Chinese improved tremendously fast.

VI. Other items

1. Foreign students are expected to arrive at the university on time. Transportation from the nearest entry port to the university will be provided for the new students if necessary.
2. Tuition fees cannot be refunded to the student if he or she discontinues his or her study or transfers to another school two weeks after classes begin. 50% of the fee will be returned to the student if he or she quits within two weeks after classes begin.
3. In weekends and holidays, foreign students can visit nearby tourist attractions such as Star Lake, Fairy Lake or Dinghu Mountain. They can also visit the cities of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Hong Kong, Macao and Guilin, all close by. They can also travel to the countryside for a first-hand look at the life of a farmer.
